Technology and the trade

A Reflection Upon Technology Advancements In The Restoration Industry

If you didn't get to read the previous funny story that my son wrote, you will want to read it first before continuing.  You can access it here.

So, after my son told me the story, he smiled broadly and asked, "What did you think of it?"

"I thought it was well written and very entertaining."  And then he said it ...

"I didn't write it ... I used ChatGPT to write it which is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program."

"You mean a computer program wrote that story?"

"Yup, I just said, 'Write me a funny story about a 1959 El Camino stealing a mans phone as he is installing a window regulator.'  And in 60 seconds the story you read is what it spit out."

I was floored.  And a little unnerved.  How could that be?

So, now I have to confess something ... the story I sent you never happened.  My son had me fooled ... and probably you too.  I can't believe what our world has come to a place where a computer with just a few promptings can write an original story like that.

I am blown away each day with the advancements we have in technology.  It wasn't that long ago that a computer barely fit inside a room and now we carry one around in our back pocket.  Vinyl records, 8-tracks, VHS, and even cassette tapes are a thing of the past.

It is incredible what technology has been able to replace.  But I still have to say, it hasn't been able to replace a real expert when it comes to restoring a classic Chevy.  Although, my son thinks that it will just be a matter of time, I can't see that happening yet.  Nothing can replace a person who has actually knowledge restoring cars vs a machine that, although it can spit out eloquent stories, can only regurgitate theory when it comes to these classic cars.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

  • What do you think of the technological advancements we've made?
  • What do you think will be the most disruptive innovations in classic car restoration?
  • What technology have you been using and seen great benefits?
  • What technology do you reject (if any) and why?

As a tech guy myself I think 3d printing could be a game changer for restoration.

That's pretty neat and a little scary. That the computer did that story? But you did get me. I didn't know that it was a computer story. I thought it was real. I even told mom the story. Now i will tell her it was a computer.
