1960 Chevy Moldings by the Numbers

Whenever a member calls and asks if the Association has a certain part, it always helps if they have a GM number to go by. This month’s Tech Check shows most of the GM numbers for side moldings (also spelled as “mouldings”) for the 1960 Late Great Chevys. Some of the numbers have been omitted due to the fact they had been discontinued at the time of printing of this reference material. However, most of the numbers are still given and can be great help when looking for that hard to find piece of side stainless or aluminum. I hope that this information will help your search for some of those hard to find moldings. — The Editor

The Chevrolet Impala was close to becoming a different car altogether. The 1956 auto show featured a Corvette Impala dream car. The Thunderbird was going to switch from being a two seat sport car to a four seat design and Corvette was thinking about doing the same. The Impala could have had a complete different history than it does now. No one knows which direction this Impala could have gone.

The Chevrolet Impala made its big debut for the 1958 model year. A full-sized automobile, it’s name was derived from the south African antelope. Through 1965, it was the most expensive passenger model that Chevrolet put out, and even though it was expensive, it became the best-selling automobile in the US, a time when full sized models were the rage. A distinctive feature for many years was that it had symmetrical triple taillights.

Editor s Note: I would like to thank Bill for this excellent technical article. It shows a tremendous amount of work and effort and is really appreciated. I am always looking for quality “how-to” articles for our publication. They do not have to be major articles like this one, but maybe a page with 3 or 4 photos. I know that we have a lot of talent out there. Why don’t some of you ace mechanics submit something for our great publication? Denny Williams

The first generation of the Chevy Caprice was truly the greatest among all its later releases. This masterpiece of Chevy automotive engineering redefined the standards for cars that were currently making the top-line series for Chevy automobiles. The Impala had already enjoyed success, and this counterpart to a vehicle of this size offered a refreshing and innovative contrast. The Estate version of this model also made some landmarks in the world of automotive releases. The Caprice was the first car released by Chevy since 1954 to feature simulated wood grains as an extremely prominent feature of the total aesthetic design.
